NEIGHBORHOOD SYNOPSIS
Charleston/Cape Arago
This area encompasses the fishing village of Charleston, with its own marina and post office, as well as the southern portion of the highway that follows the bay southwest to Cape Arago (formerly named Cape Gregory by Capt. James Cook in 1778). The neighborhood is roughly bordered on the north and west by the Fourth Creek Resevoir at Tarheel Blvd and the bay and ocean, and the east and south by the Pony Creek Resevoir and the South Slough and Seven Devils Rd leading to Hwy 101, 10 miles north of Bandon.
All of Coos Bay’s beaches and State Parks are in this area, including Bastendorf, Lighthouse, and Sunset Bay beaches, as well as Shore Acres and Cape Arago State Parks. Other points of interest include the Cape Arago Light, the South Slough National Estuarine Reserve, the Charleston Boat Basin, the Sunset Bay Golf Course, and several stunning viewpoints. There are many recreational and entertainment opportunities available as well, such as hiking, charter fishing, kayaking, whale watching, sight seeing, golfing, biking, shopping, and fine dining.
In February 2011, the homes for sale in this neighborhood ranged widely in price from $89,000 to $629,000, half of which were priced below $200,000. Most of the homes sold in the neighborhood 6 months prior to this period were 3 bedroom/2 baths, and the average sale price was $179,750. There are almost no clearly defined neighborhoods and quite a mix of old and new, stick built and manufactured homes exist right alongside each other, even on properties that provide stunning bay, ocean, or harbor views.
