NEIGHBORHOOD SYNOPSIS

Englewood/Libby

This neighborhood is located south and west of the Coos Bay town center, and is largely industrial, with vehicle repair, RV sales, warehouses, trucking distribution centers, plumbing, heating, and electrical companies, and small machine retailers making their homes here. In earlier days, coal mining operations dominated this area, and the Coalbank Slough (used to route coal from the Libby mine to shipping points beyond) is located just east of the neighborhood. The main route through Englewood is known as Southwest Boulevard which runs roughly north/south and forks off to the west at its southernmost point, becoming Libby Lane. Libby Lane extends all the way to Cape Arago Highway at its most western point near Charleston. The name Libby came from the daughter of a Coos Indian headman that once lived in the area. The Englewood/Libby neighborhood is bordered on the north by Johnson Avenue, the east and south by Coalbank Slough and its tributaries, and the west by Nichols Road.

The main residential area has a decidedly rural backdrop of views of the slough and lowlands to the east, and gradually climbing, wooded hills to the south and west. Points of interest in this neighborhood include the local DMV, Englewood Market, Fred Meyer, Safeway, and the Oregon Connection/House of Myrtlewood (featuring locally crafted gifts, ice cream, fudge, and souvenir hats, T-shirts, and sweatshirts). Although this area is located just south of the city center, it avoids the hustle and bustle of week day traffic.

In March 2011, the homes for sale in this neighborhood ranged in price from $36,000 to $187,000, the majority of which were below $150,000. Most of the homes sold in the neighborhood 6 months prior to this period were 2 bedroom/1 bath, and were around 1000 square feet of living space. All of the home sales were below $150,000, with the average sale price being $77,800. The majority of the homes in this neighborhood are modest in style and size, with the early 20th Century Bungalow and Cottage styles featuring very prominently. Also prominent is the Day Ranch style (Ranch style home with a daylight basement) due in part to the hilly terrain. As there is more room to spread out, the lots are generally larger than the standard 50 X 100’ city size, with many homes on parcels of an acre or more. Although there is not a lot of new construction to be found, there are a couple of relatively newly platted streets with buildable lots for sale.
