NEIGHBORHOOD SYNOPSIS
Hospital Park/Milner Crest
This neighborhood is where the majority of Coos Bay and North Bend’s medical facilities are located, with Bay Area Hospital being the centerpiece. Bay Area Hospital opened its doors on May 19th, 1974, admitting its first 54 patients (moved from Memorial and McCauley Hospitals). Not everyone at that time favored a new hospital, arguing that the two existing facilities were sufficient. However, 27 new physicians launched their own practices in the area immediately following the opening of Bay Area Hospital. Milner Crest refers to the crest of an elevated portion of the neighborhood overlooking the Coos Bay. The neighborhood is bordered on the north by the city limits just north of Thompson Road, on the east by Highway 101, the south by Greenwood Avenue, and the west by Woodland Drive and Ocean Boulevard.
Besides being the home of numerous clinics, labs and medical offices, this neighborhood also has a UPS Store, a Goodwill Donation Center and Store, a Social Security Office, and a highly desirable residential area filled with quiet streets and some bay view homes. The view of the bay is on the east side of the neighborhood, and is quite spectacular from certain vantage points, offering an enviable view of the ships coming in and out of the Port of Coos Bay. For a little exercise, there are nature trails near Bay Area Hospital through a lovely wooded area offering a windy path with some hills and dips.
In February 2011, the homes for sale in this neighborhood ranged in price from $59,900 to $475,000, the majority of which were below $200,000. The homes sold in the neighborhood 6 months prior to this period were all mid-20th Century (1943-1963); of various sizes and architectural styles. The average sale price was $181,800. The majority of the homes in this neighborhood were built in the mid-20th Century. Architectural styles range from 1940s Traditional to 1950s Rambler to 1950-1960s Ranch or Day Ranch. A handful of other styles and ages of homes exist, but for the most part, this neighborhood is among the most consistent in the bay area in terms of age, price, and style of home.
